New Pilot Metis Traditions Program in Eagle Point Provincial Park!

Grade four students from St. Anthony School and Eldorado Elementary School were our first students to experience Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks Council’s pilot Metis Traditions program.  This program allowed students to experience many facets of Metis culture at two pilot workshops we hosted in partnership with the Metis Nation of Alberta Local 888 on May 21 and 22, 2019 at Willey West Campground.

Students experienced Metis teachings and customs while learning about the Medicine Wheel, creating their own Talking Stick, sharing in Tipi Teachings and examining artifacts of traditional trapper lifestyle.

Thank You to our Sponsors

Through a grant from the Province of Alberta’s Community Initiatives Program, Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks Council was able to pilot the Metis Traditions program for two classes in May and will be hosting a session for Aurora grade four students in June!

A huge highlight for many students was to sit in an authentic tipi, made possible from a generous grant from the Drayton Valley Community Foundation.  The tipi can be viewed while travelling across the North Saskatchewan River bridge in the big field at the Willey West Campground.  Visitors are welcome to stop into the campground to take a closer look our “teaching tipi.”

Thank You to Our Partners

Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks Council would like to thank Alice Berger, Linda Prentice, Gordon Prentice, Wanda Schiller, Olivia Thebeau and Annette Darling from the Metis Local 888 for all their efforts in developing and delivering this program to students.
